Chamber working with Unit 9 Schools

On October 26, 2006 nine Chamber businesses met with the second and third grade teaching staff at Wanda Kendall School to kick-off the 2006-2007 “Partners In Education” program. The program is sponsored by the Watseka Area Chamber of Commerce Business Education Partnership Committee. Businesses participating in the program include: Commonwealth Credit Union, First Trust & Savings Bank, Iroquois Federal Savings & Loan, Iroquois Insurance, Iroquois Memorial Hospital, Main Source Bank, Sheldon Health Care Center, Sugar Creek Care Center, Sumner National Bank, and Watseka Rehab & Health Care Center. Personnel from these businesses go into the classroom at least once a month to listen to children read, provide individual help with reading and math flash cards, help with arts and crafts projects, and teach the students about their business through tours and programs.

Rhonda Pence, Committee Chairperson, stated, “This program is two fold; businesses can be a mentor to our students and the students get to know members of our business committee. It is important for our community to see some of the positive things happening in our school system. Who knows, one of these students could be a future customer or employee.”
