Dr. Phil Zumwalt To Lead Watseka Parade

Watseka’s July 4 Parade will be led this year by Grand Marshal Dr. Phil Zumwalt.

Dr. Phil Zumwalt grew up on a farm northeast of Sheldon, IL and graduated from Sheldon High School as Salutatorian of his class. He then attended the University of Illinois at Urbana in Pre-Med for four years and graduated with Honors. Southern Illinois University Medical School in Springfield was then selected for his medical degree due to its emphasis on clinical training and primary care. After graduating from medical school, the family practice program in Carbondale was his choice for three years of residency because of the extra training offered in obstetrics. Dr. Zumwalt became a Clinical Associate Professor for the U of I College of Medicine in Rockford for their RMED program in 1999, for the U of I College of Medicine in Peoria in 2000, and for the Southern IL University School of Medicine in 2001. The RMED Program allows for Medical Students specializing in “Rural” medicine to do an externship at I.M.H. under the tutelage of Dr. Zumwalt and other physicians.

From 1979 to 1984, Dr. Zumwalt practiced in Sheldon at Hungness Clinic. He also practiced part-time at Cissna Park from 1983 to 1985. As of September 1984, Dr. Zumwalt started sharing office space at 125 S. Fourth Street in Watseka with R. Kent Swedlund, M.D., who retired from practice in October 2003.

Dr. Zumwalt is a Board Certified Family Practice Specialist with three years of residency training after medical school. He has sub-specialized in Obstetrics to handle complications of pregnancy and delivery including Cesarean Sections, Tubal Ligations for sterilization and D&Cs. He also has surgical training for vasectomies, excisions of cysts and skin lesions, and minor surgery. Dr. Zumwalt also administers treadmill stress tests at I.M.H. His Family Practice training included Pediatric Care, office skills in ears, nose, and throat (ENT) and Dermatology, most fractures and orthopedics that do not require surgery, and the rest of general practice.

Dr. Zumwalt resides in Watseka with his wife, Anne. Dr. Phil and Anne Zumwalt have three children, Jill, Gwen, and Mark.

Sponsored by the City of Watseka, the parade will proceed north on South Second Street from Glenn Raymond Middle School, east on Walnut Street, south on Fourth Street, east on Fairman Avenue, and north on Belmont Avenue to Watseka Community High School, where the parade will disperse. Announcers Justin Kaiser and Wayne Lehmann will be located at the Main Source Bank parking lot on South Fourth Street.
